In this guide, we aim to give bats a different reputation by learning how to draw a cute bat.
In these six steps, we will show you how to draw this little bat and also explain how to color it.
Once we’ve covered all six steps, let’s look at ways you can bring your ideas into the drawing to create something even more unique.
We’ll also discuss some ways to add a background and create a scene from this design.

How to Draw A Cute Bat
Step 1
The cute bat we will draw in this guide is pretty simple in many ways, but it doesn’t hurt to prepare before drawing.
When drawing something meant to be cute, a good trick is to keep the lines as smooth as possible.
Sharper edges make an image appear richer and sharper, which can negatively impact cuteness. That’s why we use a lot of rounded lines in this design.
If you want to prepare to draw, you can use a pencil to draw some rough shapes. We recommend using one circle for the head and another smaller circle for the body.
As you can see in the following images of the pattern, the head is larger than the body. However, both can be planned as a few simple circles for now.
When drawing these planning forms, try not to press too hard with the pencil, as the lines will be difficult to erase later.
Whether or not you use these planning shapes, we can start outlining the bat’s head. This will be a very easy step; you can draw these lines along the planning circle.
These outlines will have gaps that prevent a perfect circle from being made. The largest space will be at the top of the head since that’s where we’ll be drawing the ears later.
There is then a smaller gap at the base of the head, where it joins the body. Then it’s time to continue with step 2 of the guide.
Step 2
Bats can be recognized by their large, pointy ears; we will add them to this cute bat design. As mentioned in step one, we will avoid straight lines when trying to keep this bat cute.
For this reason, we only use rounded, curved lines for the ears. Each ear starts roughly in the middle of the space we left at the top of the head.
You can start by extending a curved line on each side, each one slightly outwards. There is a rounded tip at the tip of each ear, but it should not be pointed.
The tip of each ear then tapers down in a rounded, widening line. Try to make the ears as symmetrical as possible when drawing these lines.
Once you have the outline, connect each ear with a small curved line that completes the outline above the head.
The last thing we need to do in this step is to draw the inner ear pieces.
These go into each ear and generally follow the outer contour, with the same rounded tip at the top. The tip of these inner sections may be more pointed than the outer ones.
Once these ears are drawn, we’re ready for step three of the tutorial. So if you are ready, let’s start with this step.
Step 3
What would a bat be without its wings? It’s a weird-looking mouse, so we will avoid that by adding the first wing in this cute bat drawing guide step.
Bat wings are very distinctive and recognizable. They have a bony frame and thin webbed wings between each frame rod.
For now, let’s focus on the wing on the left side of this cute bat. It starts near the base of the head and curves outwards in a slight curve.
As you can see in the reference image, it curves outward and then inward again. Again, there will be some sharp peaks, but they will mostly still be rounded.
The full outline of the wing will be a curved line with a dip in the middle, but the bottom outline will have a few small dips leading to three sharp points.
Once we have this outline, let’s draw a smaller shape inside this larger outline. It runs mostly parallel to the outer contour.
Next, draw a curved line from the pointed tips at the base to the top of this shape.
It may sound not easy, but everything should become clear if you look at the reference image.
Once you’re happy with how this first wing looks, let’s move on to the rest of the outline in the next step.
Step 4
Now that we have the first wing for this cute bat drawing, we can draw more outlines. We will add almost the entire pattern in this next step.
The first part is to draw another wing, this time on the other side of the body.
This second wing should mirror the first, and you can follow all the steps you did for the previous one.
This means you’ll draw the frame using the same curved lines and slant as the first one. Next, add the inner shape and draw the lines that will form the texture of the wing.
Once the second wing has been drawn and matched to the first, we can draw the rest of the body. This should be easy as the lines for the body are very simple.
As mentioned in the first step of the tutorial, we will make the body slightly smaller than the head. This makes this bat even cuter!
The sides of the body are drawn with some simple curved lines. Next, we’ll draw the legs as two small shapes with rounded edges.
In the next step, we will add the feet and all the final details and ideas. If you want, you can also erase the pencil lines we suggested.
Step 5
It’s time to finish off this cute bat drawing with some final touches, details, and ideas.
We still have a few final details on our design, but then let’s look at some ways you can make your design even more unique.
First, let’s draw the eyes of this cute bat. Each eye has a circular outline and, within it, a solid black pupil.
Each of these pupils has a small white dot inside that shows a twinkle in the eye. Next, draw a small nose for the bat and some curved lines for the mouth.
Now all that’s left to do is draw the feet for this cute bat. They will be small, reaching the ends of the legs.
Each foot is small, with three small, curved, pointed toes. Once those feet are added, the design is complete!
Now you can take over and add some of your ideas. One way to complete this artwork would be to add a background to the image.
Previously, we discussed some common places bats are associated with, such as cemeteries and haunted houses. These would be excellent backgrounds for this design.
Matching the cute design of this bat, you can make these background settings colorful and cartoon-like. Of course, these are just some ideas, and you could use others you have.
It could also be fun to add other characters, and that could be other bats or other animals that you like. What else would you like to add to this work of art?
Step 6
Your cute bat drawing is complete; all you have to do is decorate it with some paint. This is one of the most fun parts of drawing, allowing you to experiment and have fun.
In our reference image, we show you just one of the ways you can color this cute bat. We used simple shades of gray for the bat’s fur.
Still, there are light tones and some darker tones to add nuance and texture to the racquet. Next, we used shades of pink for the wings’ texture and the ears’ insides.
Also, in these sections, we used different tones to create nuance and variation. You can use the same colors or take a new direction when coloring your cute bat.
It’s all up to you! You can also play with the painting tools to color this cute bat.
You may want bright, vibrant colors. In this case, some colored pencils or acrylic paints might do the trick.
For lighter colors, however, watercolors or colored pencils are suitable. It all depends on what look you want for the picture. So feel free to experiment. Whatever you choose, we know it will be great!
